Warming Bernabel didn’t get the message that the Rockies’ season is a lost cause. The rookie corner infielder debuted last weekend in Baltimore and tore it up in his first five major league games. Entering the start of Colorado’s homestand on Friday, the 23-year-old is hitting .389 with a 1.254 OPS, including two homers and two doubles. Even as Colorado flirts with submitting the worst record in MLB history, Bernabel’s spark has been hard to ignore. “I see immediate confidence coming up from the minor leagues,” interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. “I see smooth. It looks like he knows what…
A majority of Coloradans will be under an ozone alert on Friday as public health officials issued an air quality warning that covers most of the Front Range. Ozone concentrations will make prolonged outdoor exposure unhealthy for people who are sensitive to pollution, including those with asthma or lung disease, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. People should avoid prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion between noon and 8 p.m. Friday. The ozone alert applies to the Interstate 25 corridor from Douglas County to Larimer and Weld counties, including Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins and Greeley. Ozone at…

Out — ILB Alex Singleton (thumb), ILB Drew Sanders (foot), OLB Que Robinson (unknown), Johnny Walker Jr. (unknown). Left practice — ILB Dre Greenlaw (quad) In an alarming sight for an already-banged-up inside linebacker room, Greenlaw pulled up with a grimace after covering J.K. Dobbins on an LB-RB one-on-one pass-coverage drill. He attempted to walk it off, but eventually headed back to the locker room. A source with knowledge of the situation told The Denver Post it was a flare-up of Greenlaw’s quad, after he’d missed…
By NICHOLAS RICCARDI, Associated Press In 2020, a disgruntled litigant posing as a deliveryman opened fire at the New Jersey home of District Judge Esther Salas, killing her 20-year-old son Daniel Anderl. Five years later, as President Donald Trump steps up his criticism of federal judges who have blocked some of his agenda, dozens of judges have had unsolicited pizzas delivered to their homes, often in Daniel Anderl’s name. District Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. of Rhode Island, who stalled Trump’s initial round of across-the-board spending cuts, is among those who received pizzas in Anderl’s name. His courtroom also has…
The first three months after Karmen Berensten opened by Union Station, back in 2019, was the best debut ever for her small boutique chain. But last week, she shuttered A Line Boutique’s store at 1750 Wewatta St., telling BusinessDen the location lost $400,000 last year. “It never came back,” she said of the pre-pandemic environment downtown. Berensten bought A Line in 2012 when it had a single location in Greenwood Village. Along with the store at the base of the Coloradan condominium complex, she added locations in Denver’s Cherry Creek, plus Salt Lake City and Carlsbad, California. She moved the original…
An old baseball adage says that it takes two to tango at the trade deadline. The Rockies and Yankees danced twice in the past week. The Rockies traded two proven veterans, third baseman Ryan McMahon and workhorse right-hander reliever Jake Bird, in exchange for four Yankees prospects. Before Thursday’s trade deadline closed, Colorado traded Bird to the Bronx for second baseman Roc Riggio and left-hander Ben Shields. Riggio was the Yankees’ No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and Shields was their No. 29 prospect. Last Friday, the Yankees sent pitching prospects Griffin Herring (No. 8) and Josh Grosz (No.…
Two people are on the run after ramming a vehicle into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers during an operation near Colorado Springs on Thursday, federal officials said. An ICE officer fired three shots into the vehicle and the suspects – who agency officials said are in the country illegally – fled the scene and later abandoned the vehicle. No injuries were reported. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place order for the 9900 block of Burgess Road and the surrounding quarter mile in Black Forest at 10:25 a.m. and urged people to secure their home or business…
As Major League Baseball’s trade deadline drew to a close Thursday, things got wild. The Astros rocked the American League by pulling off a mega-deal with the salary-dumping Twins to bring shortstop Carlos Correa back to Houston The Padres showed they’re going for it in the NL West by trading with the Athletics for closer Mason Miller and starter JP Sears. The Padres also acquired first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Orioles in exchange for six players. The Rockies? They didn’t make any blockbuster moves, but they weren’t wallflowers either. They traded veteran third baseman Ryan…
A climber was rescued after falling in Eldorado Canyon State Park on Wednesday morning. At about 8:30 a.m., authorities received a call about a fallen climber near a climbing area at the Red Garden Wall and Yellow Spur. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Mountain View Fire Rescue and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group conducted a rescue to get the man from where he had fallen. Authorities carried him out of a fallen-rock field and then brought him to the South Boulder Creek before an ambulance arrived. The three-hour rescue ended when the man was sent to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.…
