LAKEWOOD — Broomfield was on the ropes in the state tournament opener, then southpaw Maverick Scarpella dug deep, and designated hitter Nate Wochner went deep. Fossil Ridge took a 2-0 lead in the first inning at All-Star Park as Scarpella couldn’t find his command. Meanwhile, SaberCats starter Logan Hessler held Broomfield hitless for three innings. But Scarpella, an Indian Hills Community College commit who threw a no-hitter in last week’s regional final, settled in to blank Fossil Ridge for four-plus innings with a precise combination of fastball and curveballs. And in the meantime, Wochner, a BYU pitching commit who only…

Amanda Precourt’s first visit to the crumbling fortune cookie factory in Denver’s Baker neighborhood provided her with some memorable images: thin pieces of paper floating in an inch of water, emblazoned with fortunes of decades past; a ceiling that was partially exposed to the weather and laced in black mold; and gobs of vintage, cookie-making machinery that remained from the company’s six decades in business. “That first look was hilarious,” said Precourt, a developer, designer and philanthropist who sits on the board at both the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. “I didn’t know what it…

By JOSH BOAK, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday threatened a 50% tax on all imports from the European Union as well a 25% tariff on smart phones unless those products are made in America. The threats, delivered over social media, reflect Trump’s ability to disrupt the global economy with a burst of typing, as well as the reality that his tariffs have yet to produce the trade deals he is seeking or the return of domestic manufacturing he has promised voters. The Republican president said he wants to charge higher import taxes on goods from the EU, a long-standing US…

The county announced the completion of the work on social media Thursday afternoon. Also on Thursday, the Colorado Department of Transportation reopened Colo. 82 at Independence Pass, which traverses Lake and Pitkin counties near Aspen and Twin Lakes. Crews with CDOT and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center used explosives to trigger snow…

By COLLIN BINKLEY, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration from cutting off Harvard’s enrollment of foreign students, an action the Ivy League school decried as unconstitutional retaliation for defying the White House’s political demands. In its lawsuit filed earlier Friday in federal court in Boston, Harvard said the government’s action violates the First Amendment and will have an “immediate and devastating effect for Harvard and more than 7,000 visa holders.” “With the stroke of a pen, the government has sought to erase a quarter of Harvard’s student body, international students who contribute significantly…

First, a bakery. Now a kids’ summer camp? Re: “Christian summer camp says state will shut it down over gender policy,” May 20 news story A Christian summer camp near Bailey could be shut down over state regulations pending a magistrate’s ruling, according to The Denver Post. Camp IdRaHaJe, derived from the hymn “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” was founded in 1948 when common sense was still in vogue. In those days, most people could distinguish right from wrong, and children went to summer camps without fear of government intervention. “The government has no place telling religious summer camps that it…

The Phillies took three games from Colorado at Philly in the second series of the season. With their sweep in Denver, it marked the first time in Phillies franchise history that they swept a season series of at least seven games against a single opponent. The Rockies’ sad saga continued. The Nuggets have their next coach, but they still need a new architect for a roster that’s already built by cement. Don’t expect them to hire a general manager today or tomorrow. At least, that was the indication team president and governor Josh Kroenke gave while speaking with reporters on Thursday afternoon following the announcement of interim coach David Adelman’s promotion to the full-time job. “On the front office stuff, I want to take my time a little bit more,” Kroenke said. Essentially, while one search came to a quick conclusion, the other remains in its infant stages. Might Kroenke…
