Watching recent events unfold at the U.S. Air Force Academy is like having front row seats to a slow-motion train wreck. The Air Force Academy’s new superintendent, Lt. Gen. Tony D. Bauernfeind, arrived in August of 2024 and immediately embarked on his own personal shock and awe campaign. According to reports from The Colorado Springs Gazette and other news outlets, Bauernfeind is planning on reinventing the Air Force Academy in the spitting image of the Special Operations Command in Florida, which he just left. This small, specialized unit represents only about 6% of the regular Air Force. The first phase…

Forget the winning. “Hillygoat” learned the most from the fall that nearly took her life. Hillary Allen, nicknamed “Hillygoat” for her ability to zoom across steep, technical mountain terrain in an ultrarunning sport known as skyrunning, was ranked No. 1 in the Skyrunner World Series in 2017. She was on track to become the first American woman to win the circuit — until she stepped on a loose rock going around a sharp turn in Tromsø, Norway, and tumbled 150 feet off a ridge line. The Fort Collins native and Boulder resident broke 14 bones in the fall, including both…

On May 13, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, the reeling Rockies had a rare chance to stage a game-winning rally in the ninth inning. They trailed the Rangers 4-1, but there was a sliver of hope when Ryan McMahon led off with a double and Hunter Goodman followed with a single. Then, in succession, reliever Shawn Armstrong struck out Michael Toglia, Sean Bouchard and Owen Miller — all looking at strike three. It was a pull-out-your-hair moment in a pull-out-your-hair season. Not coincidentally, Bouchard was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, and Miller was designated for assignment and is…

One disastrous inning had Broomfield baseball staring down the barrel of the offseason, but Tripp Bemis made sure his team would still play on into the second weekend of the Class 5A state tournament. The fifth-seeded Eagles stunned No. 3 Arvada West in a massive, come-from-behind, 9-6 victory Saturday afternoon at All-City Field. The win in the second consolation round ensured they would move deeper into that bracket against No. 6 Regis Jesuit next Friday. Bemis, pinch-hitting in the sixth inning, blasted a deep ball into right field and right over the glove of Arvada West’s Beau Friesen. His two-run…

LAKEWOOD — Over this season and last one, Grandview baseball’s been one of Colorado’s premier programs. Unfortunately for the Wolves, Cherry Creek’s been even better. In yet another high-stakes showdown between the Centennial League and Cherry Creek School District rivals on Saturday at All-Star Park, the Bruins thumped the Wolves 7-1 in the Class 5A state tournament semifinal. It advanced defending champion Cherry Creek to next weekend’s title game, and relegated Grandview to the consolation side of the bracket in the Final Four. With the victory, Cherry Creek improved to 5-1 against Grandview in 2024 and ’25. That includes a…

There is nothing normal about the natural beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park, but visitors were pleased to find the park operating normally on Friday despite nationwide concerns over national park staffing and Washington, D.C. budget issues. The onset of the Memorial Day weekend marked the start of the park’s peak season, and with it the seasonal requirement for timed-entry reservations. That season lasts from May 23 to Oct. 13, and visitors must have a reservation to drive into the park between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Another reservation is needed for the most popular part, Bear Lake Road, between…

For 13 innings this weekend, the Colorado Rockies looked quite capable of competing with the New York Yankees. Then, everything unraveled. The Yankees scored 10 times in the fifth inning Saturday afternoon — a comprehensive collapse for the home side in a 13-1 loss in front of 43,186 at Coors Field. “We didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but we’ve still got a game tomorrow to win the series,” Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia said. “I think we just flush tonight and get ready for tomorrow. That’s it.” Fourteen batters came to the plate in the top of the fifth.…

In the middle of a 10-run inning for the New York Yankees, a line drive went over the head of Colorado Rockies second baseman Adael Amador. His glove went with it. Amador’s glove didn’t come particularly close to touching Paul Goldschmidt’s run-scoring single to right-center field, but it was certainly a strange play during a calamitous inning for the Rockies. The Yankees went on to win 13-1. After the game, Amador told The Denver Post he did not intentionally throw his glove at the ball. “I didn’t have the glove tight on my hand,” Amador said via a translator. “The…
