It was a weekend night in April at Williams & Graham, the trend-setting speakeasy in Denver’s Highland neighborhood, and the staff was worried federal immigration agents had shown up nearby. One of them called Tiffany Hernandez, a local bartender who had recently organized a seminar with a civil rights attorney that went over what to do in a similar situation. Hernandez reached out to the attorney, who said he would be at the bar in 20 minutes. The officers outside Williams & Graham turned out to be Denver Police officers conducting routine underage drinking enforcement rather than immigration agents, bar…

Jacques Bailly took a razor blade to the dictionary in 1991, revolutionizing the mechanics of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Before then, the Scripps Bee pronouncers who bestowed tricky words on the brainiacs on stage had to flip through a dictionary looking for answers whenever a contestant requested the definition or language of origin. To streamline that practice, Bailly cut out dictionary pages featuring the chosen words so the pronouncer he was assisting had all the information at their fingertips — a pre-internet feat that helped solidify his promotion to chief pronouncer more than 20 years ago. Bailly, who grew…

NEW YORK — A dual U.S. and German citizen has been arrested on charges that he traveled to Israel and attempted to firebomb the branch office of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, officials said Sunday. Federal prosecutors in New York said the man, Joseph Neumeyer, walked up to the embassy building on May 19 with a backpack containing Molotov cocktails but got into a confrontation with a guard and eventually ran away, dropping his backpack as the guard tried to grab him. Law enforcement then tracked Neumeyer down to a hotel a few blocks away from the embassy and…

Visitors paid their respects for loved ones at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on May 25, 2025. Hundreds of volunteers with Flags for Fallen Vets helped place flags on every single grave marker of fallen vets and their family members for the weekends events. Amber Schoenrock, lead coordinator for the organization, said this year they placed 109,000 flags costing $10,000 to do. They rely on volunteers to help them place the flags as well as pick up the flags after the long holiday. Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember those who have died while serving in…
A grand total of seven tornadoes touched down in eastern Colorado last week during two separate storms, according to the National Weather Service. One EF1 and three EF2 tornadoes tore across parts of Adams, Arapahoe and Elbert counties on Sunday, May 18, destroying or damaging dozens of buildings. Another EF2 and EF1 touched down on Friday, but the strength of a third tornado spotted during that storm remains unknown, according to a preliminary damage survey released Saturday by the weather service. “Most of the observed damage was snapped power poles and trees,” meteorologists stated in the report. “One single-family residence sustained…
Parts of Colorado are as vulnerable to measles as West Texas, where the highly contagious virus has infected hundreds of people and killed two. Colorado has recorded more confirmed measles cases so far this year than it has in almost two decades. Rural pockets of the state are undervaccinated, and large counties have seen their protection erode since the pandemic. The country as a whole has more than three times as many measles cases already this year as it did in all of 2024, and federal health officials are pushing vitamins as an alternative to vaccines. “I think what’s clear…
