Coloradans who’ve been repeatedly convicted of auto theft will now be prohibited from possessing a gun under new regulations signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis on Monday. House Bill 1171 adds first-degree motor vehicle theft to the state’s list of felony offenses that carry with them a loss of firearm rights. To be charged with first-degree auto theft, a person must have already been twice convicted of vehicle theft or unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The law allows a person who’s lost their ability to possess a gun because of HB-1171 to petition a court to reinstate their…
Four days after it was enacted, Colorado’s new law seeking to prevent the misgendering and deadnaming of transgender people is already facing a legal challenge from anti-trans groups that say its provisions violate their First Amendment rights. Four groups and a Colorado physician filed the lawsuit in Denver’s federal court Monday. The suit seeks to invalidate House Bill 1312, which the legislature passed earlier this month and Gov. Jared Polis signed Friday. The groups are asking a judge to rule that an underlying part of the state’s anti-discrimination law — prohibiting people from publishing statements that make specific groups of…

Pande fled the Democratic Republic of Congo — and, ultimately, the African continent — after he said he was imprisoned, tortured and targeted for assassination during his fight for peace under a corrupt government. More than a decade after he resettled in Denver, first under a U.S. visa and then as an asylee, he’s seeking a green card. For now, Pande, who asked that his last name be withheld because of continuing safety concerns, is waiting to travel to Nigeria to bury his mother as her only surviving son. He’s among Coloradans who have been granted asylum but are looking…
Dear Eric: We are retired grandparents to 7-year-old twins who live close by. We are delighted to help with kiddo chauffeuring, grocery shopping or anything else needed by two very hard-working parents. Today after dropping off groceries, my wife noted that the refrigerator, in her opinion, had an unpleasant odor and was very quick to share her opinion with my son-in-law. She is also rather critical of many of his habits. And her opinions are not without merit. But my mother always said, “less said, better mended.” When I say to my wife, “too much mother-in-law,” I catch hell. I…
Former Saints scout sees Broncos’ Pat Bryant as versatile fit in Sean Payton’s offense: ‘He’s a dog’
His time in Champaign was long done, yet Pat Bryant kept hanging around in the rain at Illinois this spring, just wanting to watch some ball. In January, Mike Neu — once a scout and quarterbacks coach for Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints — took a senior offensive assistant job at Illinois. And he got to know Bryant well enough in snippets, even as the receiver was in the middle of NFL draft prep. He loved football enough, Neu reflected, to come out and hang around spring camp, observing teammates and the next generation of Fighting Illini. A…
Colorado state Rep. Shannon Bird, a Westminster Democrat, has jumped into the fray to unseat Congressman Gabe Evans in the closely watched 8th Congressional District next year. Bird, vice chair of the powerful Joint Budget Committee in the state legislature, is the third Democrat to announce their bid for the congressional seat. It is one of the most competitive districts in the country and could prove pivotal to which party controls Congress in 2027. In an interview before her announcement, Bird highlighted her experience in the legislature passing laws to fully fund public schools for the first time in a…
Today is Tuesday, May 20, the 140th day of 2025. There are 225 days left in the year. Today in history: On May 20, 1956, the United States exploded the first airborne hydrogen bomb over Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. Also on this date: In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, which was intended to encourage settlements west of the Mississippi River by making federal land available for private ownership and farming. About 10% of the land area of the United States (270 million acres, or 1.1 million square km) would be privatized by 1934. In 1927, Charles…
Carson Palmquist’s big-league career began with a wicked twist. Last Wednesday, the lefty starter was called into the office of Triple-A Albuquerque manager Pedro Lopez, who met him with a stone face. “He said, ‘The good news is you’re getting an extra day of rest,’ “Palmquist recalled Monday before the Rockies hosted the Phillies. “The bad news is you’re going back to Double-A to pitch.’ ” For a moment, Palmquist was dumbfounded. “I was, like, really confused,” he said. “I didn’t know what I did that could have been so wrong that I was going backward. I just sat there…
Two Aurora residents were arrested Monday on suspicion of first-degree murder in a triple shooting outside a grocery store, police officials said.
