Weather forecasters did not issue a red flag warning for wildfire danger ahead of the deadly, wind-driven Marshall fire in 2021 because humidity levels were not low enough to trigger such an alert. Now, though, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists working in Boulder recommend relaxing the humidity threshold and changing the standards for a red flag warning to account for the overall potential rate of a wildfire’s spread. They also recommend using the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s alert system to warn people in fire zones of the risks. Those recommendations were included in a new report and published last…
By EDITH M. LEDERER (Associated Press) UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States defended its veto of a call for the immediate suspension of hostilities in Gaza at a U.N. meeting Tuesday and again faced demands by the Palestinians and many other countries for a cease-fire now in the Israel-Hamas war – as well as by a group of rabbis in the gallery. U.S. deputy ambassador Robert Wood called the Russian-proposed amendment to a Dec. 22 Security Council resolution which it vetoed “disconnected from the situation on the ground.” The council then adopted a watered-down resolution, with the U.S. abstaining,…
After last season ended with an upset loss in the Sweet 16, the Cherokee Trail girls basketball team’s mantra for this season is “unfinished business.” CT returned its core from that bitter ending, which senior guard Damara Allen says is “heavy motivation” for a team that has the talent to make a push for the program’s first state title. “We’ve beat Regis, we just beat No. 1-ranked Legend (on Monday),” said Allen, a University of Texas at San Antonio commit. “Even our two losses (to out-of-state teams at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona), that made us gain confidence.…
The Denver City Council is poised to put much stricter limits on when city agencies can clear homeless encampments during the cold weather months. A bill that would prohibit the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment and other city agencies from removing shelter from public places when the outside temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or below was approved on its first reading on Monday night. It must pass on a second reading next week to become law. Monday’s 9-4 vote came after a lengthy debate with members Kevin Flynn, Amanda Sawyer, Diana Romero Campbell and Darrell Watson…
A Front Range property management company specializing in student rentals has agreed to pay the state $1 million after illegally billing tenants for routine apartment services like repairs, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday. Boulder-based Four Star Realty reached the settlement with Attorney General Phil Weiser after an investigation by the Colorado Department of Law exposed multiple instances of the company charging renters for unnecessary work, unrelated damages and other fees not outlined in their leases. The settlement marks the first time the Department of Law has taken action since a state law took effect in May 2022 that…

Winter is in full swing across the state this week, with heavy snow in the mountains likely and an Arctic cold front headed for the Front Range and plains. Blizzard conditions across parts of the eastern plains overnight caused some road problems, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kansas, and the Colorado State Patrol, and most highways from Interstate 70 south were closed Tuesday morning. Looking westward to the mountains, snow and some strong wind gusts are likely Tuesday and Wednesday, and the National Weather Service in Boulder issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas above 9,000 feet.…
When a pickup truck driving through the Colorado Rocky Mountains along Interstate 70 lost control and careened 350 feet off a mountainside last week, the driver was lucky someone witnessed the accident. Mountain Recovery heavy wrecker operator Kory McMahon said that if he hadn’t witnessed the crash Friday, Jan. 5, he’s not sure anyone would have known that the Ford F-150 had plummeted over the guardrail near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels. “Nobody else had seen it. Nobody else called it in,” McMahon said. “If I hadn’t seen it, a few minutes could have passed, the snow would have covered his…
There was a time when Deon Figures was the best defensive back in college football. The Colorado legend is now officially considered among the greats to ever play the sport. On Monday, Figures was named to the College Football Hall of Fame’s 2024 class, as announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF) and the College Hall of Fame. The 2024 class includes 19 players and three coaches. Figures will be the 11th person from CU to be in the Hall, including 10 players and legendary coach Bill McCartney. “This really means a lot, to be a member of the College…
HOUSTON — Blake Corum ran for 134 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Jim Harbaugh and No. 1 Michigan — undeterred by suspensions and a sign-stealing case that shadowed the program — completed a three-year climb to a national championship by beating No. 2 Washington 34-13 Monday night in the College Football Playoff title game. The Wolverines (15-0) sealed their first national title since 1997 when Corum, who scored the winning touchdown in overtime to beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl semifinal, blasted in from the 1-yard line with 3:37 left to put Michigan up by 21 and set off…
