On the bright side, 67,221 isn’t a half-bad attendance number for a sideshow. That’s what Denver’s 16-9 home win over the Los Angeles Chargers on the final afternoon of 2023 became by the time everybody left Empower Field and headed to their New Year’s Eve parties. When the Broncos do their retrospective on how this year finished with such a thud, they’ll find they have nobody to blame but themselves. Oh, this isn’t just because of the Russell Wilson drama, either. Though that did become a big, ugly, public part of the equation this week. Denver spent several days dominating…

Game day didn’t bring the Russell Wilson benching drama to a close — or even move it to the back burner. After a 16-9 win over the Chargers on Sunday, Broncos head coach Sean Payton brushed off more questions about the nature of conversations between Wilson’s representatives and the Denver front office in late October and early November. The club asked Wilson to move back a March 17 guarantee date on $37 million in 2025 salary, Wilson said on Friday. He said that the club threatened to bench him if he didn’t and that the NFL Players Association and league…
For the second time in three meetings this season the Colorado Avalanche dominated the game against San Jose in every area but the scoreboard, but found a way to prevail. Colorado dominated for at least 50 minutes, if not more, but needed late goals from Valeri Nichushkin and Josh Manson to grab a 3-1 win Sunday night at Ball Arena. “Just got goalie’d,” Avs center Nathan MacKinnon said. “But we stuck with it. It’s cliché, but we had a good attitude after two (periods). They don’t have a great record, so it can get frustrating when you’re not producing, but…
One person was killed and another injured in a fire in south Fort Collins on Saturday. According to a media release from Poudre Fire Authority, crews were dispatched to a single story house on South Taft Hill Road shortly before 7 p.m. Upon arriving, firefighters observed smoke coming from the windows and flames in the northeast part of the home. Firefighters entered the residence and evacuated two people, but a dog in the house was deceased. The two were treated on scene and then transported to an area hospital, but one of the patients later died from their injuries, the…
The world’s first legal sale of recreational marijuana happened in Denver on Jan. 1, 2014. In fact, it happened twice. Mason Tvert was managing the onslaught of media that descended on the Mile High City to witness the historic moment, set in motion by the successful legalization campaign he’d led. So many camera crews and reporters showed up that morning that Tvert decided to rotate two groups through the dispensary’s sales floor — with each transaction billed as the first time anyone 21 or older could legally buy weed simply by walking into a store, showing ID and paying for it,…
The 2023 portion of this NHL season has often been anything but typical for the Avalanche. For a team that entered this campaign as one of the top contenders for the Stanley Cup, some of it has gone exactly as expected and other days have felt like they were extracted from a different world in an NHL multiverse. The Avs will begin 2024 atop the Central Division standings if they prevail Sunday night against the San Jose Sharks. They could also be third in the division in points percentage. They are certainly one of the best teams in the league,…
When Rocio Rosales’ hours at work were cut last year, she didn’t know how she’d make rent. She had three boys to raise, and bills were piling up. She didn’t know where to turn but had heard about The Action Center. A year later, Rosales credits the help she received from the Lakewood nonprofit with helping her to build a foundation for her and her children’s future. The Denver Post Season To Share is the annual holiday fundraising campaign for The Denver Post and The Denver Post Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Grants are awarded to local nonprofit agencies…

When voters passed Proposition 123 last year, housing and local government officials across the state were pleased that the state had supported a permanent affordable housing fund. But they had a nagging anxiety: To get a share of the nearly $300 million promised by the program, cities and counties had to voluntarily opt-in and agree to meet housing goals in the next three years. Would they? Now, with the program’s first open enrollment period over, state officials have an overwhelming answer: Yes. More than 200 jurisdictions, representing every major city and nearly 88% of Colorado’s population, opted in to the…
