What a long, strange trip it’s been. Well, it’s accurate at least for describing the last 12 months of Colorado’s always-eventful soccer scene. From having a pair of Coloradans boss a Women’s World Cup game, to a Colorado Rapids player (for now) making international news of a different kind, soccer in Colorado undoubtedly had its up and down moments. Here are the top 10 soccer stories of 2023, as determined by Colorado Rapids and Colorado Soccer beat reporter Brendan Ploen. 10) Weird weather typifies ’23 The age-old adage “save it for a rainy day” did not apply to Colorado. Not…
Three drivers across the Denver metro hit people, two walking and one riding a bicycle, within hours of each other Saturday afternoon. The driver who hit the cyclist did not stay at the scene, Commerce City police said on X. That crash, reported on X at 6:14 p.m., happened at East 72nd Avenue and Colorado 2. The cyclist suffered serious bodily injuries, police said, but is expected to survive. Aurora police, a minute before Commerce City police reported their crash, reported a driver hit a man walking near Montview Boulevard and Nome Street. That driver did stay at the scene,…
A Denver man who pushed his 2-year-old daughter’s stroller out of the way of an oncoming car in Montbello in early December, taking most of the impact himself and breaking multiple bones, died at home days after the crash. Jorge “Alonso” Garcia, 35, was walking with his daughter Dec. 7 when he was struck by a car while crossing the street near 51st Avenue and Scranton Street in Denver’s Montbello neighborhood, according to his sister, Karla Alanis. Garcia saw the car coming and pushed his daughter’s stroller out of the way before he was hit, Alanis said. His ankle, elbow…
SAN FRANCISCO — For years, Ben Black’s phone annoyed his family. It was the only Android device in a family message group with eight iPhones. Because of him, videos and photos would arrive in low resolution and there would be green bubbles of text amid bubbles of blue. But a new app called Beeper Mini gave him the ability to change that. Black, 25, used the app to create an account for Apple’s messaging service, iMessage, with his Google Pixel phone number. For the first time, every message the family exchanged had a blue bubble and members were able to…
Colorado saw fewer work-related fatalities in 2022, bucking a trend that saw workplace deaths rise nationally, according to an update from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment on Thursday. Colorado recorded 89 worker deaths on the job last year, which is a 7.3% decrease from the 96 workers who died on the job in 2021, according to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries program, which is a collaborative effort between the CDLE’s Office of Labor Market Information and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Last year, 5,486 workers died from a work-related injury nationally, a 5.7% increase from the 5,190…
Around the AFC Hey, uh, Chiefs? Kansas City is 3-5 since its 6-1 start and is coming off a loss to the Raiders last weekend without giving up an offensive touchdown. Patrick Mahomes and company are probably still fine, but, well, it’s a probably at this point. They could conceivably still choke the division away with a pair of losses to close the season (combined with two wins by either Denver or Las Vegas), but even if they wrap up the West, it looks like a flawed team down the stretch. Can they find a fresh gear in the postseason,…
Prompted by the probing interviewer known as “Curious Mike” in a rare podcast appearance made public this week, Nikola Jokic still politely swerved away from giving a straight answer to hot take television’s favorite question. But as Jokic pondered the options for his current top-five players in the NBA (excluding himself, of course), the names that reflexively occurred to him were at minimum a telling reminder of the basketball generation he recognizes as a forebearer to the rest. Kevin Durant and LeBron James were two of the first four players he floated to teammate Michael Porter Jr. in his non-answer.…

Miles Wood has a particular brand of chaotic hockey, and this was a night that called out for it. The Avalanche struggled to create offensive chances for much of the game against the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center, but one late flurry was enough. A Devon Toews shot from the left point was the difference with 2:54 remaining in a quirky 2-1 win, but Wood’s play leading to the faceoff and in front of the goalie just before Toews’ shot helped create the game-winning tally. This was far from the prettiest win of Colorado’s season, but it could prove…
