Colorado has been simply lights-out at home. After struggling for several seasons, Washington once again has its zone defense operating at a high level. One of the most important matchups during the opening weekend of league play in the Pac-12 Conference might come down to that strength-against-strength matchup. With the Los Angeles teams sputtering through nonconference play and the Huskies serving notice they could be a factor with a win against Gonzaga and three narrow, ultra-competitive defeats against top-40 NET teams, Friday’s showdown at the CU Events Center might be one of just 20 Pac-12 games over the next two-plus…

By NICHOLAS RICCARDI and DAVID SHARP (Associated Press) PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s Democratic secretary of state on Thursday removed former President Donald Trump from the state’s presidential primary ballot under the Constitution’s insurrection clause, becoming the first election official to take action unilaterally as the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to decide whether Trump remains eligible to return to the White House. The decision by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows follows a ruling earlier this month by the Colorado Supreme Court that booted Trump from the ballot there under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That decision has been…

Perfect games occur only on the baseball diamond, but the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic came mighty close on a basketball court Thursday night. The beefy center with the soft touch and magical court vision was a perfect 11 for 11 from the field and 3 for 3 from the foul line en route to 26 points as the Nuggets destroyed Memphis, 142-105, at Ball Arena. Jokick left the game late in the third quarter — with the crowd chanting “MVP” — shortly after he dished off a fastbreak assist to Christian Braun to secure a triple-double. Jokic had 10 assists and…

It’s been a wall-rattling, franchise-shaking week for the Broncos. No matter how much coach Sean Payton tries to make the benching of Russell Wilson about beating the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon, the move sent tremors through the organization. The writing’s on the wall. Divorce is coming. It could proceed in a relatively orderly fashion or it could get messy. All the while, the Broncos have two games remaining this season and slim-but-not-snuffed playoff hopes. How does a player not named Wilson or new starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham handle a week like that? Particularly one whose job it is…

Leaders in Colorado school districts are trying to solve a big problem: They want to attract and retain teachers, bus drivers and other educators, but the state’s high cost of living keeps outpacing employees’ wages even after administrators dole out raises. So now they’re entering the housing market themselves. Districts are building tiny homes, becoming landlords and partnering with developers so that they can find ways to either lease housing to their employees at below-market rates or make homeownership possible for workers who otherwise would be priced out of buying property. School districts in Colorado’s pricey high country are leading such…

COLORADO — Congresswoman Lauren Boebert announced Wednesday she will seek the 2024 Republican nomination to represent Colorado’s 4th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Congresswoman Boebert released a video on Facebook addressing her decision and issued the following statement: “My mission has always been and will always be to defend our freedoms and defeat the Democrat socialists and communists so we can take our country back, but that mission does not take place in a vacuum either personally or professionally. “Personally, this announcement is a fresh start following a difficult year for me and my family. Coloradans may be surprised to learn that, since 1926, Bigfoot has been spotted stomping through the state 130 times. That’s according to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, based in Dana Point, Calif. It may also be surprising to learn that a Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization actually exists. Then again, polling has shown that more than 1 in 5 Americans believe the big guy is out there, just out of sight. That’s roughly the same number who believe the universe began with the big bang. The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization is headed by Matt Moneymaker — a researcher featured in Animal…

A ski area in southwest Colorado will remain closed for the 2023-24 winter season after discovering a mechanical issue with its sole chairlift. Hesperus Ski Area near Durango announced the decision Wednesday, stating the gearbox on its Bighorn chairlift failed and cannot be replaced because there are no comparable parts available on the market. Neither downhill nor uphill skiing will be permitted, as the parking lots and mountain terrain will not maintained. No tubing will be offered either. “The gearbox is the lift’s transmission, as it connects the motor to the drive bullwheel and is crucial for the lift’s operation.…
