Fees — service fees, convenience fees, transfer fees, delivery fees, bank fees — are ubiquitous and, more and more, a standard part of commerce in the gig-age of the 21st century. Despite the pervasiveness of fees, they can still give consumers sticker shock. After clicking Apple Pay to buy that $25 late-night Grub Hub order, it turns into nearly twice that once tip is added — or when those $100 tickets to see that up-and-coming band quickly turn into $200 tickets. The impact on consumers’ wallets isn’t small. Take credit card fees and interest. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimates…

There’s a buzz in the Denver air, and it’s not just the holiday spirit. The local restaurant scene has been riding high the past year, and new restaurants want to get a taste of the action. Of course, we’ve had some tough closures, but Denver chefs are still taking risks and offering exciting new happy hours, neighborhood date-night spots or family favorites. In 2023, food truck operators parked their wheels for brick-and-mortar spaces, while big names like Caroline Glover, Kelly Whitaker and the owners of Michelin-starred Beckon expanded their portfolios with new intimate, cocktail-focused concepts. Local restaurateurs also produced everything…

DETROIT — The Detroit Pistons have made NBA history. Detroit became the league’s first team to lose 27 straight games in a season, falling 118-112 to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night. The Nets beat the Pistons on Saturday in Brooklyn, handing them their 26th consecutive defeat to match the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers and 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers for the most losses in a row within one season. Detroit no longer shares the unwanted mark. Next up is the overall record of 28 straight losses, set by the Philadelphia 76ers from late in the 2014-15 season through early 2015-16. At least…

The 6:04 mark in the third quarter served as a good representation of the offensive struggles Denver had for the majority of its 26-23 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday evening. On first down, quarterback Russell Wilson’s screen pass to running back Javonte Williams resulted in a 3-yard loss. On the following play, Wilson was pressured before he threw an incomplete pass to wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. With the Broncos facing a third-and-12, Patriots defensive lineman Christian Barmore pushed away Denver right guard Quinn Meinerz before recording his third sack of the game. The Broncos are in…

Four hundred and six homeowners in Superior are suing Jefferson County, accusing its airport of violating their airspace, dumping lead on them and devaluing their 230 houses. Their lawsuit, filed Dec. 21 in Boulder, marks an escalation in a years-old dispute between Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport and residents of the Rock Creek neighborhood, which is located just northwest of the airport in Boulder County. The airport has surged in popularity in recent years, with 300,000 takeoffs and landings in 2022, or one every two minutes, and likely even more in 2023. That means thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars…

Chris Christmas, a fourth-generation Black cowboy with Native American roots, considers the cowboy hat to be an indispensable part of his heritage. “I think I was born with a cowboy hat,” said the 57-year-old Denverite, whose family has resided in Colorado for 120 years. With dozens of hats in his collection today, “I buy them like sneakers,” he laughed. Christmas is pressing against the longstanding stereotype of a white-washed American West by working with hat shaper Parker Orms on a line of headwear stylized on “the untold legacy” of Black cowboy culture. “Because they had come from slavery, there wasn’t…

Stock Up RB Jaleel McLaughlin The Broncos rookie running back had 10 touches for 67 yards and looked poised to do more than that early in the game. McLaughlin has limitations, but he’s fast, he can make defenders miss and he brings a dynamic Denver’s other backs don’t have. It would be interesting over the last two games to see him take on a more significant role in Sean Payton’s offensive plan, both as a runner and a pass-catcher. WR Brandon Johnson The second-year man stepped in for Courtland Sutton (concussion) and played as extensively as he has all year.…

The image of Western ski towns as glamorous, fun-filled and carefree gets a reality check in a new documentary film focusing on disproportionally high suicide rates in Rocky Mountain states, sometimes described by mental health experts as the Suicide Belt. Called “The Paradise Paradox,” the film explores how party culture, addiction, isolation, loneliness, the high cost of mountain living and inadequate public health resources in ski towns contribute to higher suicide rates. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the six states with the highest suicide rates in 2021, four were in the Rockies. Wyoming led the…
